How to Calculate Cat Years

You have probably seen the “one cat year equals seven human years” rule. Like the dog version, it is a simplification that dates back to the 1950s — and it is not accurate. Cats age at a dramatically different pace across their lives, and the real conversion is both more interesting and more useful.

Why cats age so fast early on

A one-year-old cat has already gone through the equivalent of puberty, early adulthood, and sexual maturity. By their first birthday, a cat is developmentally similar to a 15-year-old human. By age two, they are closer to 24. After that, each additional cat year adds roughly four human years — a much gentler pace.

This front-loaded aging is why kittens need so much attention and stimulation in their first year, and why cats seem to “settle down” so rapidly between ages one and two.

The AAFP life-stage system (what vets actually use)

The American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) divides a cat’s life into six stages. Here is the approximate conversion for each:

The quick formula

If you want a single rule of thumb: the first cat year is 15 human years, the second adds 9 more (reaching 24), and every year after that adds approximately 4 human years. So a 5-year-old cat is about 36, a 10-year-old is about 56, and a 15-year-old is around 76.

Why this matters for your cat’s health

Knowing your cat’s human-equivalent age helps you interpret what vets mean when they recommend “senior bloodwork” at age 7 or more frequent checkups at 11. At 44 human years, a cat is entering middle age — the same life stage where humans start annual health screens. At 60+, many of the same conditions apply: thyroid issues, kidney disease, arthritis, and cognitive changes.
