How to Calculate Dog Years
Multiplying by seven is easy, but it misses the two things that matter most: dogs age very fast early in life, and large dogs pull ahead of small dogs after midlife. FurStage keeps both methods visible so you can see the difference instead of treating one number as universal.
The size-based method (AKC)
Enter age and adult size. The AKC chart covers ages 1–16; the giant column differs from age 1. The optional UCSD formula does not adjust for size.

The science method (UCSD 2020)
The optional research comparison uses 16 × ln(age) + 31, from a study of 104 Labrador retrievers. It was not validated as an individual lifespan prediction across all breeds. Below one year FurStage uses the selected-size chart instead.
Which result should you use?
Dogs enter senior care in the last quarter of estimated lifespan (AAHA). Enter an estimate discussed with your veterinarian, from 2 to 30 years. This is a scenario, not a prediction; without it we show no dog-stage countdown. Care-guide bands are educational. Dog senior care begins at 75% of estimated lifespan, not a universal birthday. Cats are senior above 10 years; the 15+ page is an editorial subdivision. Human-age equivalents do not determine clinical stage.
